1. 177 new mandis of 10 states and union territories linked to e-NAM platform

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, connected 177 new mandis with the National Agricultural Market (e-NAM) to strengthen agricultural marketing and facilitate farmers to sell their crop produce through online portals. has announced.

2. Government extends last date for nomination for Gandhi Peace Prize 2020

The Ministry of Culture invites nominations for the Gandhi Peace Prize every year. Nominations for the Gandhi Peace Prize must conform to the provisions of the Code of Procedure of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Gandhi Peace Prize

3. Completed 5 years of Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

The Atal Pension Yojana (APY), the flagship social security scheme of the Government of India, has completed five years of successful implementation. The scheme was launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 May 2015 specifically to provide old-age income security to workers in the unorganized sector and guarantee minimum pension after the age of 60 years.

• This scheme is undoubtedly important to meet the challenges of the rapidly growing population of the elderly in India. The journey of APY has been unprecedented in these five years and as of 9 May 2020, a total of 2,23,54,028 names have been registered under the scheme.
• During the first two years of its launch, the names of nearly 50 lakh customers were recorded which doubled to 100 lakhs in the third year and the number reached 1.50 crores in the fourth year. In the last financial year, about 70 lakh subscribers were registered under the scheme.

Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

• Atal Pension Yojana (APY) was launched on 9 May 2015 by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. APY can be taken by any Indian citizen aged 18-40 who has a bank account and its exclusivity is due to three distinct benefits.
• Firstly, it provides minimum guaranteed pension ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 on attaining the age of 60 years, secondly, on the death of the customer, the spouse is guaranteed a lifetime pension amount and finally In the event of death of both the customers and the spouse, the entire amount of pension is paid to the nominee.
• The scheme has been implemented extensively across the country, covering all states and union territories and has a male to female membership ratio of 57:43.

4. Launch of Odisha Central University Helpline “Bharosa”

Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has launched Odisha Central University (CUO) helpline “Bharosa” through a virtual platform in New Delhi.

5. Olive Ridley Turtle spotted on Odisha seashore

Recently hundreds of olive ridley turtles have been seen moving from their homes built in the sand towards the sea at the sea confluence site of the Rishikulya River in Ganjam district of Odisha.

• According to the forest department, this year more than 2 lakh 6 thousand olive ridley turtles were laid here. Due to which the Forest Department had asked the common citizens to stay away from the beach, appealing for the safety of turtles.
• Each year, on this beach, spread over four kilometers, millions of Olive Ridley turtles make their shelter for breeding. The Olive Ridley Turtles reach the coast of Odisha after traveling thousands of kilometers from their original habitat.

• Olive Ridley sea turtles are also known as ‘Pacific Olive Ridley sea turtles’. It is a medium-sized species of sea turtles found mainly in the warm waters of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans. They are non-vegetarian.
• In the Red List issued by the IUCN, it is classified as Vulnerable species.
• Olive Ridley turtles travel thousands of kilometers to lay eggs on the Ganjam coast of Odisha, and then the eggs released from these eggs return to their habitat thousands of kilometers back by sea route.

6. International Nurses Day celebrated on 12 May

7. Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Launches Champions Portal

In a major initiative, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has launched the Champions Portal. Through this portal all information related to MSME sector has been made available at one place.

• It is a technology-based management information system aimed at enabling the MSME sector nationally and globally, achieving quality and removing administrative bottlenecks.
• The portal has been named champions in line with the original goal of enabling small industries nationally and globally with a consistent application of modern technology.
• The Ministry of MSME had indicated that an ICT-based system would be set up to help small industries in the country in the current difficult circumstances which would help them to increase their capacity at national and international levels. Experimental testing of this system started on 9 May.

Features of the champions portal

• It is a technology-packed control room-cum-management information system enabled by artificial intelligence, data analytics and machine learning, in addition to ICT tools such as telephone, Internet and video conferences.
• It has been directly linked with the Government of India’s main Centralized Public Grievance Redressal and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) and other web systems of the Ministry of MSME. This entire system has been developed with indigenous technology with the help of NIC at no cost. Its physical infrastructure has been prepared in the ministry in record time.
• A network of control rooms in the information system is built into the Hub and Spoke model. The Hub is located at the office of the Secretary of MSME in New Delhi and has been linked to various offices of the Ministry in the states. As part of this control system, so far, local level control rooms have been set up in 66 states.

8. Noted historian Harishankar Vasudevan passed away

Renowned historian Harishankar Vasudevan died at the age of 68 at Corona. Professor Harishankar Vasudevan was admitted to the Ameri Kovid Hospital in Salt Lake on April 4 after showing symptoms of corona.

• Harishankar Vasudevan was a professor in the Department of History and Director of the Chinese Center at Kolkata University. Earlier, he was the director of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies Kolkata.
• Professor Hari Vasudevan was a leading expert on Russian and European history and Indo-Russian relations. He was a Distinguished, Visiting Fellow of the Observer Research Foundation and, President of the Institute of Development Studies, Kolkata.
• He made his mark while engaging in formal consultations with projects / institutes of Ministry of Culture, MHRD, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. He was the Chairman of Social Science Textbook Development Committee of NCERT since 2005.

9. Akhil Kumar again joins NADA discipline panel

Former Commonwealth Games gold medalist boxer Akhil Kumar has been re-inducted into the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) discipline panel. He was earlier a member of this panel from 2017 to 2019.

• The Arjuna Award winning Olympians have a distinct identity in the All India Games. He was also a government observer of boxing from 2017 to 2019. Presently Akhil is employed in Haryana Police and currently ACP in Gurugram.

National Doping Healing Agency (NADA)

• The National Anti-Doping Agency [NADA] was established by the Government of India with the objective of acting as an independent organization of India for the philosophy of drug-free sports. It advocates planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring of control improvement. It was established in 2005.
• The National Anti-Doping Agency has been mandated for dope-free sports in India. Its primary objective is to implement anti-doping rules as per the World Anti-Doping Agency code, regulate dope control program, promote education and research and Creating awareness about doping and its side effects.
• The National Anti Doping Agency is headed by Kiran Rijiju and secretary Ravi Mittal. Its brand is Ambassador Sunil Shetty.

10. Sania Mirza wins Fed Cup Heart Award

Tennis star Sania Mirza became the first Indian to win the Fed Cup Heart Award on 11 May, who received the award for her successful return to the court after becoming a mother.
