The CBI has registered 4,985 cases, including 4,300 regular cases (RCs) and 685 preliminary inquiries (PEs), between January 1, 2015, and February 29, 2020, the Rajya Sabha was informed by Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh.

- During this period, the CBI investigated 4,717 cases (3987 RCs and 730 PEs), Since January 1, 2015, and up to February 29, 2020, CBI has filed charge sheets in 3,700 cases.
- Giving the year-wise break-up, the minister said the CBI registered 971 RCs and 164 PEs in 2015, 925 RCs and 122 PEs in 2016, 939 RCs and 137 PEs in 2017, 765 RCs and 134 PEs in 2018, 608 RCs and 102 PEs in 2019 and 92 RCs and 26 PEs between January and February this year.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
- An Executive Order was passed by the Special Police Establishment in 1941 under a Deputy Inspector General of Police to investigate cases of bribery and corruption. In late 1942, S.P.E. The scope of the work was extended to railways in corruption cases.
- In 1943, the Government of India issued an ordinance under which a special police force was constituted and authorized to investigate certain offenses involving the departments of the Central Governments, wherever in British India. Ordinance 1943 was replaced by 1946 ordinance. Later, the same year the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 was brought into existence.
- Central Bureau of Investigation derives power from Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 to conduct investigations. Section 2 of the Act limits the investigation of offenses in the Union Territories. However, the Central Government may extend this limit to other areas which include Railways and under Section 5 (1) of the Act empowers the States to obtain consent under Section 6 of the Act.
- Central Bureau of Investigation derives authority from Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 to conduct investigations. Section 2 of the Act only limits the investigation of offenses in the Union Territories.
- According to Section 3 of the Act, special police establishment has also been empowered to investigate only those matters which have been notified by the Central Government from time to time.
